Chili at Bethany’s

Just its name — Bethany’s Airport Diner — creates a colorful image of this little restaurant before you ever walk in the door. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff will remind you of your mother’s kitchen — especially if Mom was a great cook and a collector of the kitschy. 

Bethany’s could almost be described as a Block Island museum of sorts — one that serves delicious food. That’s because there are photos of a variety of aircraft, as well as vintage propellers and hanging models that are scattered in between posters and witty signs. (“Unattended children will be given espresso and a free kitten.”) Bethany adorns the restaurant with colorful decorations for every holiday. This adds to your enjoyment while you sit inside (or outside on the patio) and watch the airport activity only a few steps away.

With this column’s summer-long theme of appetizers and cocktails, we took a bit of license, but with great results. Bethany’s well-known chili (topped with cheese and onions — or not) and cornbread along with a cold beer could be just the right lunch before you’re off to your next event. For breakfast, their mimosas are perfect with any of their savory omelets. Sangria and wines are available, too.

As you plan your summer, don’t forget Bethany’s catered “Parties on the Fly.” The covered patio is available for all types of themed parties for any age group — Seafood, Italian, Cowboy (chili, BBQ chicken) and a special one just for kids (mac ‘n cheese, hot dogs, chicken fingers).
